Larry Learner explains what it means to be a Technical Financial Accountant - February 2017

Hi Larry

I am studying the ICB Financial Accounting qualification. I was looking at the jobs I can apply for, as mentioned under: “What my title can be” on page 9 of the 2017 Prospectus.

I was wondering, what is a Technical Financial Accountant exactly and what does a TFA do?

Hi Ismail

Thanks for your question.

A technical financial accountant is a finance professional who is responsible for carrying out various aspects of the accounting function, usually under the supervision of a senior accountant. He also provides accounting and financial management support to a senior accountant, auditor, or financial manager. To work as a technical financial accountant, you can study towards a relevant accounting qualification, such as the ICB National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting.

A technical financial accountant can work at various levels within an organisation and usually starts at a junior level, and works his way up through gaining experience and earning additional qualifications.

Your duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Maintaining financial records
  • Preparing financial statements and reports
  • Paying invoices
  • Filing tax returns
  • Assisting with audits

Once you’re qualified as a technical financial accountant, you can choose to study further. Find out more about your options on page 29 of the ICB's 2017 Prospectus. Click here to download the PDF version.

Hope that helps!
