I started studying B.Com Accounting through UJ (RAU back then) in 2003. My first two years went well, although I experienced some challenges living in the residence - on campus back then. In 2006, I went through a very personally challenging year. Several things happening at once and caused me… Read more »

Success story: Noleen Dzadza

My name is Noleen and I'm currently working as an Accountant in the hotel industry in Johannesburg. I'm originally from Zimbabwe.

In 1994 I completed a Certficate in Hotel Catering and moved to Victoria Falls to look for a job. I got employed as a Filing Clerk by a small tour operator and that's when I realised that I have a passion for bookkeeping. I then registered with the ICB in 1998 and started studying via long distance correspondence. And so my accounting career began!

As I progressed through my studies and passed my ICB subjects, I managed to climb the ladder from Filing Clerk, to Accounts Clerk, to Bookkeeper, to Senior Bookkeeper, to Accountant, to HOD. All these promotions have obviously reflected in other areas - my playslip and my lifestyle have improved drastically. :-)

But it wasn't always easy. Believing in myself was tough, as I grew up with Epilepsy, fits and migraine headaches. I was mocked and laughed at throughout primary school. I always performed below average and often lost my memory, which my neurologist had to prescribe medicine for.

Doing self-study from beginning to end, while having a full-time job, being a wife and a mother was really tough. I've always studied better at night (from midnight to 3am), so sometimes I had to break from my studies when my baby woke up to be fed.

For ten years I worked for a company with very high standards. I opted for a position as HOD and the experience I gained was exceptional.

Relocating to South Africa and securing a job as a Financial Controller at a 4-star hotel, thanks to my ICB qualification, was very rewarding. Also, getting those powerful designations after my name and being a member of a professional body certainly felt great. The ICB gave me all I need to practice as an Accountant, and have helped me to start my journey to run my own accounting business in a few years.

Thanks to the ICB I now have my licence to practice, I have my designations, and they assist in continuing my professional development by offering discounted seminars. I am also now able to continue studying through ACCA, due to my ICB qualification.

If you are thinking of doing accounting, then the ICB is the way to go. They offer step-by-step qualifications and you immediately benefit, as you're recognised after each step. To those who are already studying through the ICB, stay focused. And remember, no matter how tough it gets - you will make it!

Many thanks to the ICB. I won't be where I am today without you!
