Success story: Lizelle Doble

Success story: Lizelle Doble

I started studying B.Com Accounting through UJ (RAU back then) in 2003. My first two years went well, although I experienced some challenges living in the residence - on campus back then.

In 2006, I went through a very personally challenging year. Several things happening at once and caused me to lose a lot of my self worth and self confidence. I had to halt my studies at UJ and take some time to get my life back together.

Getting back into my studies the following year was also not so easy, and I battled to get my studies back on track. I needed two more subjects to complete my degree, but did not get any help from UJ at that stage. I was convinced that all my hard work of the previous four years had all gone to waste. I could not use half a degree, and it seemed that no tertiary institution was willing to assist me in making something of the time I’d spent on my studies so far.

That’s when one of my colleagues told me about the Institute for Certified Bookkeepers. I wasn’t very keen at the start, since I had only received negativity in the past, but I took the chance and sent my entire history to the ICB. I received a very positive response and upon completing a POE & RPL, was given credit for all the work that I’ve done so far. I also met a lady with the name of Somaya Jaffar, who assisted me throughout the entire process, without one minute of impatience.

I still felt a bit overwhelmed, as I still had a lot of work to do to complete my Technical Financial Accountant (NQF 5) and Financial Accountant (NQF 6) levels, and with a husband and two toddlers at home under the age of 4. But the ICB gave me sufficient time to be able to have a home life and study. I finished my Technical Financial Accountant level while having my second baby in 2010, and then started my Financial Accountant level in 2011.

I am now almost finished with my Financial Accountant level and feel a lot more confident about my future. Studying through the ICB has equipped me to become a Tax Practitioner and now I can assist clients with their tax assessments in my spare time. I have also been able to use my new qualifications to enhance my career in the past two years. It’s also given me the opportunity to refresh my accounting knowledge, which I’m sure will not be a waste of time.

My dream is to one day be able to go out on my own and start my own accounting business. I’ve already gotten one client and believe that with my new knowledge, it will grow more by the day.

To others who are thinking about studying through the ICB... go for it!  I’ve seen what universities have to offer, and I feel that the ICB has a much tighter grip on life. You can enhance yourself through the ICB without giving up on having a personal life or even a family. You can have it all!  It’s possible!  I’m living proof! Thank you ICB!
