A deaf ICB student excels in Worcester

Nicholas Wilson received a special certificate at the annual Merit function of Worcester Campus on 1 September 2011. He obtained the Further Education and Training Certificate: Bookkeeping NQF L4 with distinction. He also passed the National Certificate: Bookkeeping NQF L3 with distinction in 2010.
Nicholas matriculated at the De La Bat School for the Deaf and represented the Western Province u/18 rugby team at the National Week for Special Schools. As being deaf limits his career opportunities, Nicholas decided in 2009 to enrol for the Junior Bookkeeper programme to further his career.
Although Boland College facilitators are not specifically trained to accommodate learners with hearing impediments, they accepted the challenge to assist Nicholas to probe new horizons of career growth and improved remuneration. Owing to budgeting constraints, facilitators had to make do without the aid of a sign language interpreter. Thanks to patience and innovation, as well as sustained commitment by Nicholas, communication took place through clear articulation and effective summaries on the traditional black board, overhead- and data projectors.
As sign is his first language, Afrikaans his second and English his third, Business Literacy was a special challenge to Nicholas. At our request, ICB allowed him to use a bilingual dictionary during the summative assessment.
Nicholas plans to get married next year. Boland College wishes him well and is grateful and proud for having made a small contribution to his future career.
Boland College’s students have certainly excelled in the ICB qualifications. One of their students is in the national top 10 for the November examination, and three more were in the April examination. These are all achievements to be proud of.
