Liz Zielinski sent us this inspiring story about how after her divorce, investing in herself has helped her to grow, both in her career and personally:
"I have been in the accounting sector for many years, but only had experience, no paperwork or qualifications to back up my experience.
Due to unforeseen circumstances I got divorced. Because I was then raising a child on a small salary, I was advised to sue for maintenance. Most women sue and land up having to pay expensive lawyers' bills - often still with no maintenance, and with bills and food costs pilling up.
I decided to build myself up - do something for me! If I have to pay money to a lawyer to get maintenance I'd rather spend it on furthering my studies. I have always wanted to study and go further in the accounting field.
I enrolled myself at Instructability and registered as a member of the ICB. I started in 2006 and wrote the Junior Bookkeeping course first. After I received my results it gave me more confidence not just in my work but also in myself.
Instructability has been there all the way with me, encouraging me to go further as it will pay off in the end. They treat you with respect and at all times are very professional in the way they handle the students, I can only say 'thank you' to them. I also work for a fantastic accounting firm in Alberton which really helps a lot.
This whole process has taken some time, with many tears and a lot of sweat, but when I do my work now I see things differently and approach my work with more confidence and pride.
To end my 'success story', I am writing my second last subject, Bus Literacy, in December and will write Business Law & Accounting Control next year, and then if all goes well I will receive my qualification as a Tech Financial Accountant."
