Dear ICB My name is Gudani Mufamadi and I'm 19 years old. I could give you a thousand reasons to motivate my application for an ICB bursary, but the most important one is that I absolutely love what I'm studying. I've recently experienced financial contraints, as my family has lost… Read more »

Bursary winner: A letter from Menas Banda

Dear ICB

My name is Menas Banda. Thank you for considering my application for a bursary.

A career in accounting has been a dream of mine since I was in Grade 11. I was selected to compete as an Old Mutual Best Maths Student in Malawi. Although I didn't do so well, I was encouraged to work extra harder in maths and accounting.

After reading many books and magazine articles about women who are financial managers, chartered accountants and CEOs, I was extremely motivated. I said to myself, "One day it will be me". I'm still saying it to this day.

I came to South Africa in 1997, soon after Matric. I did secretarial studies and did very well, especially in the accounting module. But in 2004, things started getting very difficult for me. I lost my husband and father in the same year.

I am now a single mother and a domestic worker, earning a very small salary. My greatest challenge at the moment is to find a better job to be able to put my kids through high school.

Once again, thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards,
Menas
